Arteriovenous Malformation

An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the brain, where arteries pass directly into veins, leading to increased pressure and the risk of bleeding. AVMs are congenital, meaning they are present from birth.

With decades of experience, we specialize in evaluating whether treatment is necessary or if observation is the best course of action. AVMs can be treated using surgery, radiosurgery, endovascular embolization, or a combination of these approaches.

Treatments

  • Microsurgery – The AVM is carefully removed through precise surgical techniques.

  • Endovascular Embolization – A minimally invasive procedure where a catheter is used to block blood flow to the AVM.

  • Radiosurgery – A non-invasive technique using focused radiation to shrink the AVM over time.
